Robert Reich:What will it take to get us off our carbon addiction?

Two years ago, dozens of runaway rail tanker cars carrying 1.5 million gallons of crude oil derailed in the center of the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic, causing a massive explosion that killed 47 people. But we seem to have forgotten that tragedy. The number of oil tanker railway cars crossing America increased from 9,500 in 2008 to 436,000 last year. Since the start of this year, six derailments have occurred in the U.S. and in Canada – nearly one per month.
Meanwhile, the Koch brothers and their allies are still pressuring Congress to allow the Keystone XL Pipeline to be finished, even though oil pipeline leaks have become commonplace. The U.S. has just opened up drilling in the Arctic. Oil tankers are multiplying without adequate international supervision. As if this weren’t enough evidence of carbon poisoning, fracking is generating environmental hazards across the nation’s midsection – from water pollution to earthquakes. What will it take to get us off our carbon addiction?
Hardly a laughing matter, but sometimes satire makes the point especially clearly. See below.
